1841 Richard Owen coined dinosaur
Richard Owen (20, July 1804- 18 December 1892) 1894 engraving from an 1840s painting by Pickersgill, later hand colouring. Owen was a comparative anatomist and palaeontologist. He coined the word Dinosauria in a presentation at a meeting of the British Association of the Advancement of Science in August 1841 (1842 Vol. II Report on the British Reptiles). Later he lead the first reconstruction of life-like dinosaurs in the Crystal Palace grounds at Sydnham Park (open 1854). In 1881 he established the new British Museum of Natural History at South Kensington with dinosaurs on prominent display. He worked hard and wrote prolifically, but his scientific legacy is limited. Owens reputation was damaged by his unwillingness to admit mistakes or accept criticism, and a tendency to ruthlessly manoeuvre positions to take credit for discoveries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the engraving of Richard Owen, a renowned comparative anatomist and palaeontologist, created by Pickersgill in the 1840s. Hand-colored with meticulous detail, this artwork captures the essence of Owen's significant contributions to the scientific world. In 1841, Richard Owen coined the term "Dinosauria" during a presentation at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. This groundbreaking moment forever changed our understanding of prehistoric creatures. His expertise led him to reconstruct life-like dinosaurs within Sydenham Park's Crystal Palace grounds when it opened in 1854. Owen's dedication to his field was further demonstrated when he established the prestigious British Museum of Natural History at South Kensington in 1881. Within its walls, awe-inspiring dinosaur displays took center stage, captivating visitors from all walks of life. Despite his undeniable accomplishments, Richard Owen faced criticism due to his reluctance to admit mistakes or accept differing viewpoints. His reputation suffered as he maneuvered positions to claim credit for discoveries made by others. Nevertheless, his legacy endures as an influential figure in both comparative anatomy and paleontology. Paul D.
