Hatching turtles
Hatching turtles. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas, right) and a hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata, left) hatchlings emerging from their eggs. These eggs are in a protected hatchery. They are left to hatch naturally and then taken to the sea to be released. The next day the nests are dug out and any unhatched eggs placed to one side. Turtles are wholly aquatic reptiles, the females only coming ashore to lay their eggs. The loss of nesting beaches and the effects of hunting and pollution have endangered some turtle species. Photographed in Turtle Island Marine Park, Pulau Gulisan, Sabah, Malaysia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the precious moment of hatching turtles emerging from their eggs in a protected hatchery. On the right, a vibrant green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and on the left, an elegant hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) can be seen breaking free into the world. These tiny hatchlings are nurtured until they naturally hatch and then carefully transported to the sea for release. The following day, dedicated conservationists meticulously excavate the nests, separating any unhatched eggs for further examination. Turtles are remarkable aquatic reptiles that only venture ashore to lay their eggs. Sadly, due to factors such as habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, several turtle species face endangerment today. This photograph was taken at Turtle Island Marine Park located in Pulau Gulisan, Sabah - a breathtaking natural haven in Malaysia. It serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect these incredible creatures and preserve their nesting beaches. With its focus on young wildlife and nature conservation efforts in South East Asia's Sabah region, this image showcases not just two adorable offspring but also highlights important aspects of biology and zoology within the context of reptilian life cycles. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this duo's emergence into existence while shedding light on crucial environmental issues affecting these magnificent creatures' survival.
