Firefly, SEM

Firefly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a firefly (family Lampyridae). These winged beetles, also known as lightning bugs, are named for their ability to flash their abdomens. This is achieved using an enzyme (luciferase) to oxidise a chemical in a chamber in the tip of its abdomen (lower left), and is known as bioluminescence. The firefly controls the flashes by regulating the amount of oxygen that enters the chamber. The flashes of light are used to attract mates. Magnification: x6 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a firefly, a member of the Lampyridae family. Commonly known as lightning bugs, these winged beetles possess a remarkable ability to flash their abdomens, giving them an enchanting glow. The image, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), reveals intricate details of this tiny creature's anatomy. At the lower left corner of its abdomen lies a chamber where bioluminescence occurs. Through the action of an enzyme called luciferase, a chemical is oxidized within this chamber, resulting in bursts of light emitted by the firefly. Astonishingly, these flashes are under precise control as the insect regulates oxygen levels entering the chamber. The purpose behind this luminous display becomes evident when considering that fireflies employ their radiant glows to attract potential mates. Each flicker serves as an alluring signal in their quest for companionship and reproduction. Photographer Steve Gschmeissner skillfully captures this natural wonder with his lens and presents it against a pristine white background. The high magnification used allows viewers to appreciate every minute detail present on the delicate wings and body structure of this bioluminescent beetle. This stunning print not only highlights nature's extraordinary creations but also invites us to marvel at the wonders hidden within our own world – reminding us that even in darkness, there is always something beautiful waiting to be discovered.
