Eel scale, light micrograph

Eel scale. Polarised light micrograph of a scale from the skin of an eel (Anguilla anguilla). The scales are just under the skin and form a protective skeleton. Each scale plate consists of a lower fibrous plate and an upper clear plate of dentine. Dentine is added to the edge of the plate each year. In the summer the plate grows faster (thick ring) than in the winter (thin ring), so each years growth is demarcated. On this scale, there are six concentric growth rings, which means the eel is approximately six years old. Magnification: x103 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an eel scale, as seen under a light microscope. The polarised light micrograph reveals the delicate structure of a single scale from the skin of an eel (Anguilla anguilla). These scales serve as a protective skeleton for the creature, located just beneath its skin. Examining this image closely, we can observe that each scale plate consists of two layers: a lower fibrous plate and an upper clear plate made of dentine. Remarkably, dentine is added to the edge of the plate every year. The growth rings on this particular scale provide valuable insights into the age of the eel. With six concentric growth rings visible, it can be estimated that this eel is approximately six years old. The alternating thicknesses in these growth rings indicate seasonal variations in growth rate. Thicker rings represent faster summer growth while thinner ones signify slower winter growth. This natural demarcation allows scientists to date each year's growth accurately. This mesmerizing photograph not only highlights nature's intricate design but also serves as a testament to scientific exploration and our understanding of marine biology and ichthyology. It reminds us how even seemingly small details like an eel scale can hold significant clues about an animal's life history and contribute to our knowledge in zoology and anatomy.
