Dumbbell Nebula, 19th century
Dumbbell Nebula. 19th-century astronomical observation of the Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC 6853). North is at top. This planetary nebula consists of an expanding shell of material ejected from a star around 14, 000 years ago. It is about 1360 light years away, in the constellation of Vulpecula. This 90-minute exposure was obtained on 27 August 1887, from the observatory in Maghull, Merseyside, UK. This observatory was operated by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts (1829-1904), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print showcases the Dumbbell Nebula, a mesmerizing astronomical observation captured by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts. The image depicts the planetary nebula, also known as M27 or NGC 6853, situated approximately 1360 light years away in the constellation of Vulpecula. The Dumbbell Nebula is composed of an expanding shell of material that was ejected from a star nearly 14,000 years ago. This stunning monochrome photograph was taken on August 27,1887, at the Maghull Observatory in Merseyside, UK. Isaac Roberts played a pivotal role in pioneering astrophotography techniques and his work greatly contributed to early astronomical photographs. The circular shape and intricate details of this celestial wonder are beautifully captured through a long exposure technique employed during this historic observation. The image reveals the ethereal nature of the night sky as it highlights the delicate structure and immense beauty found within our universe. This remarkable snapshot not only serves as a testament to human curiosity but also represents an important milestone in both English history and astrophysics. It stands as a reminder of how far we have come in understanding our place within the cosmos while inspiring future generations to continue exploring its mysteries.
