Dried algae

Dried algae on finger produced by Greenfuel Technologies, USA. Algae are photosynthesising microorganisms that convert carbon dioxide (CO2) and sunlight into lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. GreenFuel Technologies has built a system that feeds waste CO2 from industrial smokestacks into an algae bioreactor. By using strains of algae that produce high concentrations of proteins, the algae can be dried and used as fertiliser, animal feed or burned as biomass. High lipid producing algae strains could also be used in the system. The lipids can be harvested for use as vegetable oil or biodiesel. Algae grow rapidly and are simple to cultivate. Unlike fossil fuels, algae products are bio-degradable and non-toxic. Photographed in 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative work of GreenFuel Technologies in harnessing the power of dried algae. The image captures a close-up view of dried algae on a finger, highlighting the intricate structure and vibrant coloration of these photosynthesizing microorganisms. GreenFuel Technologies has developed an ingenious system that utilizes waste carbon dioxide from industrial smokestacks to feed an algae bioreactor. Through this process, algae convert CO2 and sunlight into valuable lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. By selecting strains of algae that produce high concentrations of proteins or lipids, GreenFuel Technologies opens up various possibilities for their application. The dried algae produced by this groundbreaking technology can be used as fertilizers or animal feed, providing sustainable alternatives to traditional products. Additionally, they can be burned as biomass for energy generation or harvested for vegetable oil and biodiesel production. What makes this approach even more remarkable is its environmental impact. Unlike fossil fuels, which contribute to pollution and climate change, algae-based products are biodegradable and non-toxic. This aligns perfectly with our urgent need for renewable energy sources in the 21st century. Photographed in 2007 by Science Photo Library in Massachusetts, USA. , this image symbolizes the potential of biology applied through chemistry to revolutionize our energy landscape. It serves as a testament to the promising advancements being made in renewable fuel research and highlights how simple yet powerful organisms like algae can play a vital role in creating a greener future for us all.
