Development of Numerals C017 / 6675
Table from 1882 illustrating the development of numerals from the 1st century AD as seen by the philologist Canon Isaac Taylor. Subsequent scholarly research and debate expanded this view. It is now widely accepted that todays symbols are Western Arabic numerals which originated from Indian Brahmi numerals. The nine Hindu-Arabic symbols (glyphs) had been introduced into Europe at the beginning of the 13th century, principally by Fibonacci, but only came into general use two centuries later. This positional decimal system with its zero symbol made calculations much easier to do than clumsy Roman numerals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Development of Numerals C017 / 6675" a table dating back to 1882 that sheds light on the evolution of numerals throughout history. The philologist Canon Isaac Taylor meticulously documented this progression, which has since been expanded upon through extensive scholarly research and debate. Today, it is widely accepted that our modern numeral system, known as Western Arabic numerals, originated from ancient Indian Brahmi numerals. This revolutionary concept was introduced into Europe during the early 13th century by Fibonacci, an influential mathematician. However, it took another two centuries for these nine Hindu-Arabic symbols or glyphs to gain widespread use across the continent. The introduction of this positional decimal system with its groundbreaking zero symbol revolutionized calculations and made them significantly easier than using cumbersome Roman numerals. It marked a turning point in mathematical history and laid the foundation for countless advancements in various fields. Through this mesmerizing image captured by Sheila Terry from Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to witness the remarkable journey of numbers and their transformation over centuries. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our constant pursuit of knowledge and progress in understanding numerical systems.
