Coloured SEM of human embryo at 8-cell stage
Eight-cell embryo. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human embryo at the eight cell stage, three days after fertilisation. Known as a morula, this is a cluster of eight large rounded cells called blastomeres. Smaller spherical structures (centre right and left) will degenerate. The surface of each cell is covered in microvilli. This embryo is at the early stage of transformation into a human composed of millions of cells. Here it is dividing to form a hollow ball of cells (the blastocyst). At this eight- cell stage the morula has not yet implanted in the uterus (womb). Magnification: x900 at 6x7cm size. Mag.: x2, 500 at 8x10" ; x1080 at 4x5" size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of human life at its earliest stages. At the eight-cell stage, just three days after fertilization, we witness the remarkable transformation of a human embryo. Known as a morula, this cluster of eight large rounded cells called blastomeres holds immense potential for growth and development. The vibrant colors in this image bring to life the delicate microcosm within each cell. The surface of every individual cell is adorned with microvilli, tiny hair-like structures that play a crucial role in cellular function. As we observe closely, smaller spherical structures can be seen on either side of the blastomeres; these will eventually degenerate as part of nature's selective process. At this early stage, our embryo is embarking on an incredible journey towards becoming a fully-formed human composed of millions of cells. It is currently dividing rapidly to form what will soon become a hollow ball known as the blastocyst. It's important to note that this mesmerizing photograph captures only one moment in time – before implantation into the uterus (womb) has occurred. With magnification levels reaching up to x2,500 at 8x10 inches or x1080 at 4x5 inches size, Science Photo Library provides us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the wonders unfolding within our own bodies during those precious initial stages of existence.
