Cleopatra VII

Cleopatra VII Philopator 69-30 BC. Detail after a bas relief in the Temple of Hathor, Dendera, Egypt. This has been considered as an attempted likeness of Cleopatra based on the long narrow eye, the aquiline nose and the upward curving mouth similar to those of her father Ptolemy XIII. On the temple exterior there is also a carving of Cleopatra and her son. Cleopatra represented herself as the reincarnation of an Egyptian goddess Isis and is shown here in that role. She ruled Egypt from 51 BC - 30 BC and was the last member of the Ptolemy dynasty of Egyptian rulers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed bas relief of Cleopatra VII, the iconic queen and ruler of ancient Egypt. The image is derived from the Temple of Hathor in Dendera, Egypt, where this depiction has been considered an attempted likeness of Cleopatra herself. The artist skillfully captures her distinctive features such as the long narrow eye, aquiline nose, and upward curving mouth – traits reminiscent of her father Ptolemy XIII. Interestingly, this particular carving also portrays Cleopatra alongside her son, emphasizing their significant bond and dynastic lineage. It is worth noting that Cleopatra often presented herself as the embodiment of the Egyptian goddess Isis – a symbolically powerful role she assumed during her reign. This portrayal reinforces her connection to Egyptian mythology and highlights her influence as both a political leader and religious figure. Cleopatra's rule over Egypt spanned from 51 BC to 30 BC, marking the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled for centuries. As one gazes upon this remarkable image captured by Science Photo Library, it becomes evident why Cleopatra remains an enduring symbol of power and beauty throughout history. Her legacy continues to fascinate us with its blend of political prowess, mythological associations, and cultural significance within ancient Egypt.
