EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable recovery of a fragment from the Chebarkul meteorite, which made headlines during the Chelyabinsk Event in February 2013. The image showcases divers carefully securing ropes and strapping around the largest known meteorite fragment retrieved from Lake Chebarkul. Weighing an astonishing 600 kilograms, this specimen rests on a metal sheet that was used to drag it ashore. The Chelyabinsk meteoroid, estimated to have weighed several thousand tons, exploded in an airblast after reaching an altitude of approximately 20 kilometers. As it hurtled through Earth's atmosphere, the fireball caused a distinctive black fusion crust on its surface. This extraordinary photograph was taken on October 16th, 2013. The recovery operation took place in Russia's Chelyabinsk region and involved extensive research by both European and Asian scientists. The Cyrillic lettering visible on the straps adds an authentic touch to this momentous event in earth science history. This image serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination as we explore celestial phenomena that impact our planet. It symbolizes our ongoing efforts to unravel the mysteries of space and understand natural hazards that can affect us here on Earth.
