Chartists treason trial, 19th century C015 / 6079
Chartists treason trial. 19th-century artwork of a courthouse with Chartists (far right) being tried for treason by judges (left), barristers (foreground), and a jury (background). Chartism was a political movement in the UK that failed to achieve reforms such as extending the vote and right to be a Member of Parliament to the working classes. Following a Peoples Charter of 1838, national conventions, petitions, public unrest, general strikes, trials, and parliamentary votes took place. The movement died out in the 1850s. Artwork from History of the Chartist Movement (Robert George Gammage, 1894)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the historic Chartist treason trial, a pivotal moment in British political history. The scene depicts a grand courthouse where Chartists, positioned on the far right of the image, are being tried for treason by judges on the left. In the foreground, barristers engage in intense legal arguments while a jury deliberates in the background. The Chartists were members of a political movement that emerged in the UK during this era with aspirations to secure voting and parliamentary rights for working-class citizens. However, their efforts ultimately fell short as they faced numerous obstacles including public unrest, strikes, trials, and parliamentary votes. Painted by Robert George Gammage in 1894 as part of his comprehensive work "History of the Chartist Movement" this monochrome illustration vividly portrays an important chapter in British social reform and jurisprudence. It serves as a testament to both the determination of these reformers and their ultimate failure to achieve lasting change. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking piece of art from Middle Temple Library/Science Photo Library's collection, we are transported back to an era when politics was fiercely debated within courtrooms like these. This image stands as a reminder of how far society has come since then and encourages us to reflect on our ongoing pursuit of justice and equality for all.
