Thomas Huxley, caricature

Thomas Huxley (1825-1895). Caricature of the English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, showing him with a wide jaw, large nose and bushy sideburns. Huxley was a strong advocate of Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection. He was often its main supporter in scientific debates, as Darwin shunned publicity. In 1860 Huxley presented Darwins theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford, where he faced an ardent opponent, Bishop Samuel Wilberfoce. Huxley won the day by confirming that humans were primates. He turned the evolution debate into one of science rather than emotion. Huxley invented the word agnostic as a means of expressing his religious beliefs. EDITORS COMMENTS

This 19th-century caricature print captures the essence of Thomas Huxley, a prominent English biologist and ardent supporter of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. With his wide jaw, large nose, and bushy sideburns humorously exaggerated, Huxley's distinctive features are brought to life in this comical illustration. Huxley played a pivotal role in scientific debates surrounding Darwin's theory. In 1860, at the prestigious British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting held at Oxford, he boldly presented Darwin's ideas despite facing opposition from Bishop Samuel Wilberforce. The highlight of their clash was when Huxley confirmed that humans were indeed primates, solidifying his victory and shifting the debate towards science rather than emotion. Not only did Huxley champion evolutionary biology but he also left an indelible mark on religious discourse. He coined the term "agnostic" as a way to express his own religious beliefs - acknowledging that there were limits to human knowledge about God or any higher power. This monochrome artwork not only showcases Huxley's physical appearance but also symbolizes his significant contributions to both science and religion during this transformative period in history. As one of history's most influential biologists and thinkers, Thomas Henry Huxley remains an icon whose legacy continues to shape our understanding of evolution and its implications for humanity.
