Bonobo ape
Bonobo ape (Pan paniscus). This species of chimpanzee was discovered in 1929. It lives in a matriarchal and egalitarian society where sexual activity between members plays a major role in greeting, conflict resolution and post-conflict resolution, regardless of age and sex. In the wild it is found only in a small area of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is considered to be the most endangered of the great apes. It is threatened by habitat loss, the bush meat trade and the trade in live primates. Photographed at the Lola ya Bonobo (Bonobo Paradise) Sanctuary, Democratic Republic of Congo

Africa African Chimpanzee Conservation Endangered Face Gracile Mammal Matriarchal Primate Threatened Bonobo Democratic Republic Of Congo Egalitarian Pan Paniscus
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Bonobo ape, also known as Pan paniscus. Discovered in 1929, this species of chimpanzee resides exclusively within a small region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, its existence is under grave threat due to habitat loss, the bush meat trade, and live primate trafficking. What sets the Bonobo ape apart is its unique social structure. Living in a matriarchal and egalitarian society, these apes engage in sexual activity as a means of greeting one another, resolving conflicts, and reconciling after disputes - regardless of age or sex. This distinctive behavior highlights their complex communication system. Photographed at the Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary in DRC's Bonobo Paradise, this image captures an intimate moment with one individual bonobo. The sanctuary serves as a crucial refuge for these endangered creatures and plays a vital role in conservation efforts. With its expressive face and intricate biological features on display here, we are reminded of the urgent need to protect these incredible animals from extinction. As one of Africa's most endangered great apes, concerted efforts must be made to combat threats such as deforestation and illegal wildlife trade. Through photographs like this one by Science Photo Library that capture both beauty and vulnerability simultaneously, we are encouraged to appreciate nature's wonders while recognizing our responsibility to safeguard them for future generations.
