ATV in orbit, stereo image
Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) in orbit, stereo artwork. This is an unmanned resupply vehicle used by the European Space Agency to supply the International Space Station (ISS). After being released in orbit an ATV uses its thrusters to dock with the ISS. It is also used to boost the ISS to reverse orbit degradation. After being loaded with waste, it separates and de-orbits, burning up in Earths atmosphere. As of early 2012, two ATVs have been launched (Jules Verne in 2008 and Johannes Kepler in 2011) with three more planned for 2012, 2013, and 2014. This image is designed to be viewed through 3D red-cyan glasses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stereo artwork captures the awe-inspiring sight of an Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) in orbit around Earth. The ATV, an unmanned resupply vehicle developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), plays a crucial role in supporting the International Space Station (ISS). Equipped with powerful thrusters, it navigates through space to dock with the ISS and deliver essential supplies. Beyond its resupply mission, the ATV also serves as a guardian for the ISS, boosting it to counteract orbital degradation. Once loaded with waste materials from the station, this technological marvel separates and embarks on its final journey towards Earth. As it re-enters our planet's atmosphere, it gracefully burns up while fulfilling its duty. The image showcases intricate details of this remarkable spacecraft against a backdrop of our beautiful blue planet. Designed specifically for viewing through 3D red-cyan glasses, it offers viewers a unique perspective on space exploration. With two successful launches already completed – Jules Verne in 2008 and Johannes Kepler in 2011 – three more ATVs are planned for future missions between 2012 and 2014. This stunning illustration not only highlights cutting-edge technology but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planetary boundaries. It is a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration as we continue to push the boundaries of space exploration in the 21st century.
