Alexander Butlerov, Russian chemist

Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov (1828-1886), Russian chemist. From 1857, Butlerov worked on the newly proposed model of chemical structure, with atoms with fixed valencies (the number of bonded neighbour atoms each atom has) held together by single or multiple bonds to form molecules. He was the first to use double bonds in structural formulae. He also published papers on the oxidation of organic compounds and studied polymerization reactions. Artwork from 1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Russian chemist, Alexander Mikhailovich Butlerov (1828-1886), whose groundbreaking contributions revolutionized the field of chemistry. In this historical illustration dating back to 1880, we are presented with a striking portrait of Butlerov, capturing his intellectual prowess and profound impact on scientific knowledge. Butlerov dedicated his career to exploring the newly proposed model of chemical structure, which introduced atoms with fixed valencies bonded together by single or multiple bonds to form molecules. A true pioneer in his field, he was the first to incorporate double bonds into structural formulae, forever changing our understanding of molecular composition. Beyond his revolutionary work on chemical structures, Butlerov also delved into research on oxidation processes in organic compounds and conducted extensive studies on polymerization reactions. His investigations paved the way for advancements in various industries that rely heavily on polymers today. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork from over a century ago, we are reminded not only of Butlerov's immense intellect but also of his lasting legacy as one of Russia's most influential scientists. This monochromatic portrayal captures both the essence of a man deeply committed to unraveling nature's mysteries and an era defined by scientific progress.
