Aardwolf C018 / 9327

The aardwolf inhabits the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa. It is a solitary and nocturnal animal that lives in abandoned aardvark burrows and grows to lengths of 80 centimetres. The majority of its diet consists of termites, which it licks up with its long sticky tongue, but it will take other insects, birds eggs and occasionally small rodents. Its large ears enable it to hear termites moving underground. Photographed in Etosha National Park, Namibia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the elusive Aardwolf, known as C018 / 9327 in scientific terms. Native to the grasslands of eastern and southern Africa, this solitary mammal finds solace in abandoned aardvark burrows. Growing up to 80 centimetres long, it is a creature that thrives under cover of darkness. The Aardwolf's diet primarily consists of termites, which it skillfully collects with its long and sticky tongue. However, this resourceful predator also indulges in other insects, bird eggs, and occasionally small rodents. Its exceptional hearing abilities are attributed to its large ears that enable it to detect even the faintest movements of termites underground. Immersed in the breathtaking landscape of Etosha National Park in Namibia, this photograph beautifully showcases the natural habitat where these remarkable creatures roam freely. The image not only highlights their unique biology but also emphasizes their crucial role as insectivorous predators within African ecosystems. Tony Camacho's lens has perfectly captured an intimate moment with this awe-inspiring animal. This stunning visual representation from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of our planet's diverse wildlife and encourages us to appreciate and protect these extraordinary species for generations to come.
