In the sweltering summer of 1916, the quayside of Salonika, or Thessaloniki as it is also known, in Greece, became a bustling scene of activity as Russian troops disembarked from their ships, marking the beginning of their participation in the Balkan front of World War I. The men, dressed in their military uniforms and armed with rifles, are seen here marching in formation, their Colours held aloft by their comrades. The Colours, or flags, were a symbol of the regiment's history and tradition, and were treated with great reverence. The troops were met by a crowd of curious onlookers, including civilians and local officials, who watched with a mix of awe and apprehension as the Russian army made its way through the port city. The arrival of these troops marked a significant shift in the balance of power on the Balkan front, as the Russians joined forces with their Allies to push back against the Central Powers. The First World War was a time of great upheaval and sacrifice, and this image captures a moment of both military strategy and human interest as the Russian troops make their way ashore in Salonika.
