EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this vintage photo print, we witness the heroic efforts of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in action during the early 1900s in Truro, Cornwall. A crowd of onlookers gathers to witness these brave men as they tirelessly combat a blazing inferno. With determination etched on their faces, they hand pump hoses alongside a powerful steam-powered engine. Established in 1868, the Truro Volunteer Brigade was an integral part of safeguarding the community against devastating fires. Equipped with two fire engines and an escape apparatus housed at St Marys Street station initially, their dedication led them to relocate to the Town Hall before settling into their new fire station at High Cross in 1882. This photograph is a testament to both Arthur William Jordan's skill behind the lens and his ability to capture significant moments from history. The image encapsulates not only the bravery and selflessness displayed by these firefighters but also serves as a reminder of how far firefighting techniques have evolved over time. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us pay tribute to those who risked their lives for public safety. This remarkable piece from Royal Cornwall Museum allows us glimpses into our past while honoring those who served within Truro's Volunteer Fire Brigade during this Edwardian era.
