Lostwithiel Bridge, North Street, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. 1914

A view of the bridge from the south side. The bridge over the River Fowey is described in British Listed Buildings as mid 15th century, with additional flood arch of 18th century and later repairs. Slatestone rubble with chamfered granite copings to parapet walls. The bridge runs east/west across the river, with the 18th century works to the east. There are five pointed arches, with relieving arches. From the south, there is a low four centred arch to the left and four main arches. The two main arches to the left are slightly taller, with cutwaters between the refuges on top. The five arches are 13 feet in span and to the right, there is a sixth taller round flood arch with buttress to the left and smaller round floor arch, rebuilt in the 18th century. The parapets were added in 1676 and are splayed back at the west end, extending overall by around 30 feet. The roadway is 11 feet wide. (Sources: Henderson, C. and Coates, H. Old Cornish Bridges and Streams, 1928). Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the year 1914, capturing the picturesque Lostwithiel Bridge in all its historic glory. Located on North Street in Lostwithiel, Cornwall, this iconic bridge spans across the enchanting River Fowey. The British Listed Buildings describe this architectural marvel as a mid-15th century structure with several notable additions over the years. Constructed from slatestone rubble and adorned with chamfered granite copings on its parapet walls, it stands as a testament to timeless craftsmanship. From the south side of the bridge, we are treated to an exquisite view showcasing its five pointed arches, each supported by relieving arches. The two main arches on the left slightly tower above their counterparts and feature cutwaters between refuges atop them. To add even more character to this already magnificent sight, there is a sixth round flood arch with a sturdy buttress on one side and another smaller round floor arch that was rebuilt during the 18th century. Dating back to 1676, charming parapets were added to enhance safety for pedestrians crossing this beloved landmark. At its west end, these parapets splay back gracefully while extending around 30 feet overall. The roadway itself measures 11 feet wide. Preserved through time by photographer Herbert Hughes' lens, this remarkable image invites us into Cornwall's rich history and showcases both architectural beauty and engineering prowess at their finest.
