EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image depicts Roderic, the last recognized king of the Visigoths, who ruled from 710 to 712 AD. The Visigoths were a Germanic people who had established a kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula in the 5th century AD. Roderic's reign marked the end of the Visigothic Kingdom and the beginning of the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Roderic was the son of Witiza, who was deposed in a coup led by Roderic's own brother, Tudela. Roderic managed to regain the throne with the help of the Frankish king, Theuderic III, and ruled from Toledo, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom. During his reign, Roderic faced numerous challenges both from within and outside his kingdom. He had to deal with internal rebellions, including one led by his own brother, Theudemar, who had been exiled but returned with Frankish support. Roderic also had to contend with external threats, including the Umayyad Caliphate, which was expanding its territory in the Iberian Peninsula. Despite these challenges, Roderic managed to maintain some degree of stability in his kingdom. He issued laws, known as the "Lex Roderica," which regulated various aspects of society, including marriage, inheritance, and crime and punishment. He also undertook military campaigns against the Muslims, but ultimately, he was unable to prevent their advance. In 711 AD, the Umayyad army, led by Tariq ibn Ziyad, invaded the Iberian Peninsula and defeated Roderic's forces at the Battle of Guadalete. Roderic was killed in the battle, and the Visigothic Kingdom came to an end. This image captures the regal dignity of Roderic, the last king of the Visigoths, as he faced the challenges of his time and tried to preserve his kingdom against overwhelming odds.
