Taken on March 29, 1910, at the Hotel Astor in New York City, the two men were brought together at a reception hosted by the prestigious Explorers Club. Robert Edwin Peary (1856-1920), an American naval officer and polar explorer, is famously known for his claim of reaching the North Pole on April 6, 1909. Peary's achievement, however, remains a subject of debate due to conflicting evidence. Regardless, his determination and relentless pursuit of polar exploration made him a celebrated figure. Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922), a British explorer, is best known for his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917), during which he attempted to make the first crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea.
