EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration transports us back in time to the historic moment when Roald Amundsen and his brave team of explorers calculated their position at the South Pole in December 1911. Amundsen, the fearless Norwegian explorer, and four of his men, Olav Bjaaland, Helmer Hanssen, Sverre Hassel, and Oscar Wisting, had become the first humans to reach the Earth's southernmost point just a few days prior. In this image, Amundsen is seen meticulously using a sextant and an artificial horizon to determine their exact location. The sextant, a vital navigational instrument, allowed them to measure the angle between the horizon and the sun or a star, enabling them to calculate their latitude. The artificial horizon, a flat mirror with a graduated scale, ensured accurate readings by providing a stable reference point. The year was 1912, and the South Pole Expedition of 1910-1912 had achieved a monumental feat in human history. Amundsen and his team's success came after a grueling 99-day journey from their base camp at the Bay of Whales. Their determination, planning, and innovative use of technology proved that mankind's spirit of exploration and discovery knew no bounds. This evocative illustration serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the relentless pursuit of knowledge that drives us to explore the most remote and inhospitable corners of our planet. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the incredible achievements of the past and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
