EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished figure of Richard Brownlow (1552-1638), a prominent lawyer and Chief Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas in London during the late Tudor and early Stuart periods. The title of Chief Prothonotary was an impressive one, signifying Brownlow's role as the chief clerk and record-keeper of the court. Brownlow's legal career spanned several decades, and he is known to have been admitted to the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court in London, in 1577. By the early 1600s, he had established himself as a respected and successful lawyer, and in 1605, he was appointed as the Chief Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas, a position he held until his retirement in 1638. The Court of Common Pleas was one of the busiest and most important courts in Tudor and Stuart England, dealing with a wide range of civil cases, including disputes over property, contracts, and personal injuries. Brownlow's role as Chief Prothonotary would have involved him in the day-to-day administration of the court, as well as the maintenance of its records, which were essential for the resolution of legal disputes. In this portrait, Brownlow is depicted in the traditional attire of a Tudor lawyer, wearing a black robe and a white collar and cuffs. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of authority and competence, reflecting the important role he played in the English legal system of the time. The portrait provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of Tudor law and the men who upheld it, offering a valuable insight into the past and the people who shaped it.
