EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a historic moment in Montenegrian history as the surviving heroes of the Battle of Grahovac gather at Cetinje in 1911. The Battle of Grahovac, fought from 28th April to 1st May 1858, was a pivotal moment in Montenegro's struggle for independence against the Ottoman Turks. Grand Duke Mirko Petrovic-Njegos led a formidable Montenegrin army of 7,500 men against a Turkish force estimated to be between 7,000 to 13,000 strong. The Montenegrin forces emerged victorious, leaving the Turks in disarray and securing a considerable arsenal of war trophies. The photograph shows these veteran soldiers, many of whom had fought in the decisive battle over six decades earlier, proudly posing with some of the captured weapons and artillery. The cannon and other trophies, still bearing the scars of battle, serve as a reminder of the courage and determination of the Montenegrin people in their fight for freedom. The scene is set against the backdrop of the beautiful Montenegrin countryside, with the mountains of Lovcen and Orjen looming in the distance. The image is a poignant testament to the enduring spirit of these brave men and their indomitable will to defend their homeland.
