EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII, proudly dons the grand costume of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitallers of Malta at the Historical Costume Ball held at Devonshire House in London, in July 1897. The ball was an extravagant celebration in honor of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, marking her sixty-year reign on the British throne. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire graciously hosted the event, which was attended by approximately seven hundred royal and distinguished guests. The Prince of Wales, who was a patron of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, or the Knights Hospitallers, took the opportunity to showcase his authentic costume of the Grand Master, a title he held in the Order. The Prince's attire is a stunning display of historical accuracy and grandeur. He wears a white mantle, edged with ermine, adorned with the red cross of the Order, and a golden collar. The collar is adorned with precious stones, including a diamond in the center, adding to the opulence of the ensemble. The Prince's regal appearance is further accentuated by the golden tassel and chain hanging from the collar. The Devonshire House Ball was a night of splendor and celebration, with guests dressed in historical costumes representing various eras and royal lineages. The Prince of Wales' attendance and authentic portrayal of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitallers added an air of authenticity and excitement to the already magnificent event. This photograph serves as a testament to the grandeur and historical significance of the occasion, capturing a moment in time that will forever be remembered in British royal history.
