Born on November 30, 1799, Ernst Augustus was a German prince who held the titles of Duke of Cumberland and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. When his father, King George III, died in 1820, Ernst Augustus's elder brother, George IV, ascended the British throne, leaving Ernst Augustus to pursue his claim to the Duchy of Hanover. In 1837, following the death of King William II of Hanover, Ernst Augustus finally became the King of Hanover.
