Cumberland is a city located in Allegany County, Maryland, and is the county seat and largest city in the county. A population of approximately 20,000 people and is situated along the Potomac River at the base of Wills Mountain. The city was founded in 1787 by English settlers who were attracted to its location on the river and its natural resources. Cumberland has been an important transportation hub since its founding due to its location at a crossroads between east-west routes such as the National Road (now US Route 40) and north-south routes such as Interstate 68. This strategic position has allowed Cumberland to become an important industrial center for steel production, coal mining, and other industries over time. Today, Cumberland is known for its historic downtown area which features many 19th century buildings that have been preserved or restored over time. The downtown area also includes several restaurants, shops, galleries, museums, parks and other attractions that make it a popular destination for visitors from all over Maryland and beyond. In addition to these attractions there are also many outdoor activities available nearby including hiking trails along Wills Creek or canoeing down the Potomac River.
