This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of Arctic exploration as sailors from the Alert Expedition receive a vital dose of prevention against scurvy. Dated to 1875, the photograph shows a sailor being served a glass of fresh lime juice by a shipmate, a simple yet effective remedy against the debilitating disease that was all too common among seafarers. Scurvy, caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, was a major health concern for sailors during long voyages, particularly in the Arctic where fresh produce was scarce. Symptoms of the disease include swollen gums, anemia, and joint pain, and if left untreated, it could lead to death.
