Americans Caps Headgear Uniforms Officers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, published in The Sphere magazine in 1918, showcases the diverse range of headgear worn by American enlisted men and officers during the First World War. As the United States entered the conflict in 1917, its military adopted a variety of hats and caps to suit different roles and conditions. In the foreground, we see the iconic Aviator's Helmet, complete with goggles and earphones, worn by pilots and observers. The Helmet, M1917, was designed to protect the head from high-velocity bullets and shrapnel. Next to it, a Doughboy helmet sits atop a stack of equipment. The Doughboy helmet, also known as the M1917 helmet, was the standard issue helmet for American infantry during the war. Its distinctive leather liner and steel rim provided protection against shrapnel and shell fragments. A Stetson-style forage cap is shown on the head of an officer, representing the United States Army's infantry and cavalry branches. This type of headgear was popular due to its versatility and compatibility with various uniforms. Additionally, the illustration depicts the M1917 gas helmet, which was designed to protect soldiers from poisonous gases. The helmet featured a large, domed hood with a filter canister and a pair of goggles. Lastly, a kepi, a type of peaked cap, is shown on the head of a non-commissioned officer. Kepis were worn by various branches of the military, including artillery and supply units. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse range of headgear used by American soldiers during the First World War. It serves as a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of military uniforms in response to the unique challenges of modern warfare.
