Vickers Supermarine Walrus Amphibian Flying Boat with a Bristol Pegasus engine

Vickers Supermarine Walrus Amphibian Flying Boat with a Bristol Pegasus engine.
Walrus is a single engined ( pusher ) biplane amphibian flying boat constructed almost entirely of metal, stainless and duralumin, the hull is flush riveted and the fabric covered superstructure has spars of stainless steel.
It is designed for service with naval cruisers and aircraft carriers for reconnaissance, fleet spotting, photographic and training purposes.
A retractable undercarriage, hydraulically operated, provides for landing on an aerodrome or on the sea. In the raised position the wheels are housed in recesses in the bottom main planes.
Walrus will be carried by vessels equipped with catapult launching gear. It was the first military aircraft with a retractable undercarriage to be adopted by the Royal Air Force and the first amphibian aircraft to be catapulted with full military load. Slinging gear is provided for hoisting on board on the conclusion of a flight.
The pilot and observor have a clear field of view, unrestricted by floats or wings from the forward enclosed cockpit.
For stowage purposes the wings can be easily and quickly folded.
A production order for the Fleet Air Arm for the Royal Navy has been received. The same type known as Seagull V, has been supplied to the Royal Australian Air Force.
18 June 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Vickers Supermarine Walrus Amphibian Flying Boat with a Bristol Pegasus engine. The Walrus, a single-engined biplane amphibian flying boat, was meticulously constructed using metal, stainless steel, and duralumin materials. Its sleek design featured flush riveted hulls and fabric-covered superstructures with stainless steel spars. Primarily designed for naval cruisers and aircraft carriers, the Walrus served various purposes such as reconnaissance, fleet spotting, photography missions, and training exercises. Equipped with a retractable undercarriage operated hydraulically, this remarkable aircraft could land on both aerodromes and water surfaces effortlessly. When not in use, the wheels were neatly housed in recesses within the main planes. Notably groundbreaking for its time period, the Walrus became the first military aircraft adopted by the Royal Air Force to feature a retractable undercarriage. Additionally, it held another significant achievement as being the first amphibian aircraft to be catapulted while carrying full military load. The pilot and observer enjoyed an unobstructed view from their forward enclosed cockpit since there were no floats or wings hindering their line of sight. Furthermore, convenience was prioritized during stowage as the wings could be easily folded when required. This particular photo captures an important moment in history as it signifies that a production order had been received by Fleet Air Arm for service within the Royal Navy. It is worth noting that a similar version known as Seagull V had already been supplied to the Royal Australian Air Force prior to this date on 18 June 1936.
