Engraving of the Powell & Lealand No. 1 microscope built around the middle of the nineteenth century. It was considered one of the best microscopes ever made & was in continuous production, with modifications, until the twentieth century. It was an all-brass construction set on a tripod base with a centrable mechanical stage for the specimen (right). A box of glass slides with paper labels is at bottom right.
