Mealybug, SEM

Mealybug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female mealybug (Planococcus sp.). The females possess feeding mouthparts (lower right), but no wings. They are pests of various fruit crops, including grapes and citrus fruits. Mealybugs feed on plant sap, which weakens the plant, causing it to wilt and often die. Magnification: x110 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a female mealybug, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mealybugs are notorious pests that infest various fruit crops, including grapes and citrus fruits. The absence of wings distinguishes females from their male counterparts. In this image, we can observe the feeding mouthparts located in the lower right section of the mealybug's body. Mealybugs survive by extracting plant sap, which weakens the host plant over time. This constant depletion often leads to wilting and even death for many plants unfortunate enough to fall victim to these tiny insects. With a magnification level of x110 at 6x7cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate the remarkable scale and complexity of these invertebrates. The detailed features visible include its head with compound eyes and antennae, as well as its legs essential for mobility. Through this striking image provided by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the world of zoology and witness nature's incredible diversity up close.
