Housefly C015 / 9927

Housefly (Musca domestica). This fly feeds on organic material, including decomposing matter, and carries numerous diseases which it can spread to human food. This housefly is part of waste digestion research. Housefly maggots (larvae, see C015/9937 and C015/9938) are being used to digest the residual material from anaerobic digesters used to break down organic waste. The product is the maggots themselves, which are harvested before they turn into flies. The maggots are processed for the oils and protein they contain. This research was carried out in 2012 by the UKs Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Housefly C015 / 9927, also known as the Musca domestica. With its intricate details captured against a pristine white background, this image highlights the beauty and complexity of this common insect species. However, beyond its aesthetic appeal lies a deeper significance. The Housefly is not just an ordinary pest; it plays a crucial role in waste digestion research conducted by the UK's Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA). This particular housefly is utilized to tackle organic waste through anaerobic digesters. The maggots of these flies, depicted in other prints (C015/9937 and C015/9938), are employed to break down residual material from these digesters before they transform into adult flies. Harvested for their oils and protein content, these maggots offer potential benefits for animal feed production. It is essential to recognize that this research was carried out in 2012 with no commercial implications mentioned. Instead, it sheds light on innovative approaches towards waste management and sustainable practices within our environment. By capturing this momentous scientific endeavor through photography, Science Photo Library provides us with an opportunity to appreciate nature's intricacies while simultaneously exploring groundbreaking advancements in biological research.
