EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the charming essence of The Falcon Inn and its picturesque surroundings in St Mawgan, Cornwall. Taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer, this glass lantern slide is part of his lecture series titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots". In this particular image, we are transported back in time to witness the quaint beauty of St Mawgan. The focal point is The Falcon Inn, an inviting establishment that exudes warmth and hospitality. Its traditional architecture stands proudly against the backdrop of rolling hills that stretch into the distance. As our gaze follows the uphill view from The Falcon Inn, we notice a postman making his way towards us. This simple yet significant detail adds life and movement to the scene, reminding us of the daily routines that have shaped this historic village. It's worth mentioning that St Mawgan has deep historical ties with the Arundell family, known as the great Arundells due to their immense wealth. Their influence can still be felt today through various landmarks and cultural heritage sites scattered throughout Cornwall. Major Arthur William Gill's talent for capturing vivid images shines through in this quarter plate slide. His meticulous attention to detail extends beyond photography; he skillfully hand-painted many slides like these to enhance their visual impact. This extraordinary glimpse into Cornwall's past serves as a testament to both Major Gill's artistry and St Mawgan's enduring allure as one of Cornwall's most cherished beauty spots
