EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the essence of youthful political ambition, this print showcases the School Political Candidates of Fowey, Cornwall in May 1992. As part of the BBC Newsround programme, schools nationwide engaged in their own debates and elections, fostering a sense of civic engagement among young minds. The candidates featured here represent a diverse range of political ideologies. From left to right, we have Kirsten Freemantle representing the Green Party, Stephen Gilbert proudly donning the Liberal Democrats' colors, Clare Marsh embodying Conservative values, Samuel Dyke advocating for Labour's cause, and James Mason standing tall as Mebyon Kernow's representative. Interestingly enough, Stephen Gilbert would go on to make his mark in politics beyond this school election. Elected as Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay during the 2010 general election; however, he faced defeat at the hands of a Conservative candidate in 2015. Today he shares his wealth of knowledge as a History and Politics teacher at Kings School in Worcester. This photograph captures not only these aspiring politicians but also serves as a reminder that even within school walls, political discourse can flourish. Clad in their smart school uniforms complete with blazers and ties adorned with rosettes reflecting their party affiliations - these young individuals exemplify how early exposure to politics can shape future leaders.
