The competition was established in 1891 and was one of the oldest and most prestigious domestic cups in Scottish football. John MacDonald, a versatile player who could operate in midfield or defense, joined Rangers in 1972 and made over 200 appearances for the club between 1972 and 1980. He was a key member of the Rangers team that won the Co-operative Cup in 1976, scoring the winning goal in the final against Celtic. Tam Forsyth, a dynamic winger, joined Rangers in 1977 and made over 150 appearances for the club between 1977 and 1982. He was part of the Rangers team that won the Co-operative Cup in 1981, scoring the opening goal in the final against Dundee United.
