An area of approximately 150 acres has been devastated and practically all the storage huts have been destroyed, their positions being marked by large craters. EDITORS COMMENTS
The main ammunition depot at Mariensiel, Germany, lies in ruins after the devastating RAF bombing raid on the night of 11-12 February 1943. This powerful print captures the aftermath of destruction caused by explosive detonations within the storage huts. Spread across an area of approximately 150 acres, this once bustling facility now stands as a haunting testament to the horrors of war. The large craters scattered throughout the landscape mark the exact positions where these storage huts once stood, their remnants obliterated by immense force. The sheer scale of devastation is evident as one gazes upon this desolate scene. Intriguingly, to the top left corner of this photograph, three oil storage tanks can be seen bearing signs of damage inflicted during this merciless air raid. These tanks were not spared from destruction and serve as a reminder that no structure was safe from enemy attacks. This image transports us back to February 1943 when Europe was engulfed in conflict during World War II. It serves as a poignant reminder of both human resilience and suffering endured during those dark times. As we reflect upon history through Memory Lane Prints' remarkable collection, let us remember those who lived through such harrowing experiences and honor their enduring spirit.
