Simmering in a shed yard, No. 60022 Mallard gets a check from its crew in March 1965

Simmering in a shed yard, No. 60022 Mallard gets a check from its crew in March 1965, just prior to withdrawal by British Railways after 1.5m miles of service, for preservation as the world steam speed record holder. The speed of 126mph was achieved by the LNER with a test train on Stoke Bank, near Grantham, on July 3, 1938. Restored to working order for its 50th anniversary in 1988, Mallard is now a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum, York.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to March 1965, where the iconic No. 60022 Mallard is seen simmering in a shed yard. The steam train stands tall and proud, as its crew meticulously checks every detail before its withdrawal by British Railways after an astounding 1.5 million miles of service. This particular locomotive holds a special place in history as the world steam speed record holder. Back on July 3,1938, the LNER achieved an incredible speed of 126mph with a test train on Stoke Bank near Grantham. Mallard's remarkable feat secured its preservation for future generations. After being lovingly restored to working order for its momentous 50th anniversary in 1988, Mallard now resides as a static exhibit at the National Railway Museum in York. Its presence serves as a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of yesteryears. The image captures not only the grandeur of this magnificent machine but also evokes nostalgia for an era when steam trains ruled the tracks. It reminds us of their significance in shaping transportation history and igniting our collective fascination with railways. This Memory Lane Print from Daily Mirror transports us back to witness firsthand one of humanity's greatest achievements in railway technology – forever etching Mallard into our memories as an emblematic symbol of power, speed, and innovation that continues to inspire awe today.
