EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting, titled "Judgment of Solomon," is an illustration taken from the Biblia Sacra, edited in Frankfurt in 1704. The scene depicts King Solomon of the Jews, who ruled from 970 to 931 BC, presiding over a judgment that would solidify his reputation as a wise and just ruler. The story is recounted in 1 Kings 3:16-28 of the Old Testament. In this illustration, Solomon, played by the figure in the center wearing a crown and a long robe, is flanked by two women, each claiming to be the mother of a live child. Unable to determine the true mother, Solomon proposes a solution: he orders that the child be cut in half and given to one of them. The real mother, moved by compassion for her child, relents and confesses her identity, revealing herself as the true mother. The painting, created in the 17th century, is a testament to the enduring power of this biblical tale. It is a masterpiece of miniature painting, executed in black and white, with intricate details that bring the characters and the scene to life. The painting is a part of the vast collection of the National Library in Madrid, Spain, in the Autonomous Community of Madrid. It is a priceless treasure of European art history, and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire and captivate us.
