EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, showcases two charming Isle of Skye Terriers, named for their origins on the Scottish island of Skye. The breed, known for its distinctive appearance and historical significance, is represented here by two distinct variations: one drop-eared and the other prick-eared. The drop-eared Skye Terrier, on the left, sports a pair of elegantly folded ears that drape gracefully against its head. This ear type was once more common in the breed but has since been largely replaced by the prick-eared variety. The drop-eared Skye Terrier was favored by some for its unique appearance and believed to have better scenting abilities due to its ears being closer to the ground. The prick-eared Skye Terrier, on the right, displays the more traditional, upright ears that are now synonymous with the breed. Both dogs exhibit the breed's characteristic features, such as their dense, double coat, small, compact size, and expressive, alert faces. The Isle of Skye Terrier, also known as the Shaw Terrier, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Originally bred for hunting badgers and other vermin, these dogs were prized for their agility, courage, and tenacity. Over the centuries, they have become cherished companions and show dogs, with the first official breed standard being established in 1887. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the natural beauty and diversity of the Isle of Skye Terrier breed. It serves as a reminder of the breed's historical significance and the enduring appeal of these charming, Scottish terriers.
