EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the harsh realities of Russian fish trading in the mid-19th century. Three hearty workers, bundled up against the cold in their warm hats, tunics, and boots, laboriously transport fish from the waterfront to their market stalls. The fish, freshly caught from the icy waters, are carefully arranged in barrels atop a sledge, which is being pulled by a pair of horses. The scene is one of industry and determination, as the workers navigate the snowy terrain with their precious cargo. The history of Russian fishing dates back to ancient times, with evidence of fish being harvested from the country's vast waterways as early as the 10th century. However, it was during the 18th and 19th centuries that commercial fishing became a significant industry, with Russia becoming a major exporter of fish to Europe. This photograph, taken circa 1840, offers a glimpse into the daily life of Russian fish merchants and their laborers. The workers' tunics, which were typically made of wool or linen, provided insulation against the cold, while their warm hats protected their heads from the elements. The horses, too, were outfitted with blankets and harnesses to keep them warm during the harsh winter months. Despite the challenging conditions, the Russian fish trade thrived, with markets in cities like Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Archangel serving as hubs for the distribution of fish throughout Europe and beyond. This photograph is a testament to the resilience and hard work of the Russian people, who braved the elements to bring the freshest catch to market.
