EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Gerald David Lascelles, the younger son of Princess Royal, is seen with his new bride, Angela Marguerite Dowding, following their marriage ceremony at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster, London, on May 13, 1953. The young couple's union took place amidst the grandeur and excitement of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation celebrations. Gerald Lascelles, born on March 15, 1924, was the second child and only son of Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of King George V, and her husband, Viscount Lascelles. Angela Dowding, born on July 15, 1924, hailed from a humble background and was a former secretary before her marriage to the royal. Their marriage was a significant event in British royal history, as it marked the first time a British princess's daughter married a commoner. The wedding was a low-key affair, with only a few close family members and friends in attendance. Despite the simplicity of the ceremony, the union of Gerald and Angela was widely celebrated, and they went on to have three children together: Prince William, Princess Margaret Rosalind, and Prince Richard. This photograph captures the happiness and joy of the newlyweds as they leave the church, with Gerald looking dapper in his military uniform and Angela radiant in her wedding gown. The image offers a glimpse into the history of the British monarchy and the evolving role of the royal family in society.
