EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures the Duke and Duchess of York, later known as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, on their honeymoon in 1923. The newlyweds are seen strolling through the picturesque gardens of Polesden Lacey, a stunning manor house in Surrey, England. The Duke, dressed in a smart suit and hat, tenderly holds the hand of his bride, the Duchess, who is elegantly dressed in a flowing white gown and veil, adorned with a delicate lacey bow. The young couple's romance blossomed during their courtship, and they were married on June 26, 1923, at Westminster Abbey. The Duchess, who was the widow of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, brought her young son, the future Duke of Kent, to the marriage, making the Duke a stepfather. This photograph, taken in the early days of their marriage, captures the joy and excitement of their honeymoon. The Duke and Duchess appear deeply in love, and their connection is evident in their body language and expressions. The serene setting of Polesden Lacey, with its beautiful gardens and rolling hills, provides the perfect backdrop for their romantic getaway. The Duke and Duchess went on to have two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, respectively. The couple's marriage was marked by challenges, including the Duke's brother's abdication, but they remained devoted to each other until the Duchess's death in 2002. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of their early days of marriage and the love that sustained them through the years.
