EDITORS COMMENTS
G-ADVE, a beautifully preserved example of the Short S23 Empire Flying Boat, also known as the Centurion, graces the shores of an idyllic lake. This historic aircraft, manufactured by Short Brothers in the United Kingdom between 1938 and 1945, was primarily used for maritime patrol and transport during World War II. The S23 Empire Flying Boat was a significant development in aviation technology, as it was one of the first aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water without the use of a runway. The Centurion, specifically registered as G-ADVE, served with distinction in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and later with the South African Air Force (SAAF). After its military service, it was converted for civilian use and operated as a charter aircraft for several years. In the late 1960s, G-ADVE was retired from service and eventually found its way to its current resting place. Today, G-ADVE stands as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the past. Its sleek lines and distinctive hull design continue to captivate aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The plane's rich history, combined with its unique ability to fly and land on water, makes it a truly remarkable sight. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and grace of this historic aircraft.
