EDITORS COMMENTS
A Right Whale, c. 1880s - A Majestic Giant of the Sea This evocative photograph captures the awe-inspiring sight of a Right Whale (Mysticetus balaenoptera) surfacing in the 19th century. The Right Whale, also known as the Common Right Whale, is the smallest of the baleen whales and one of the most endangered large whale species. This historical image, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a rare glimpse into the past, when whaling was a significant industry. The Right Whale is easily identified by its callosities, or rough patches, on its head and body, which are unique to each individual. In this photograph, we can see the whale's large, fan-shaped tail and the distinctive spout of water vapor that rises from its blowhole. The Right Whale is a filter feeder, consuming vast quantities of krill and other small organisms, and can reach lengths of up to 50 feet and weights of over 70 tons. The photograph also reveals the presence of a wooden whaling ship in the background, a reminder of the historical context of the image. Whaling was a major economic activity during the 19th century, with Right Whales being highly prized for their oil-rich blubber. The ships, like the one depicted here, would follow the migratory patterns of the whales and harpoon them using hand-thrown harpoons or cannons. Despite the decline of commercial whaling, the Right Whale population remains threatened by various human activities, including ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and noise pollution. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
