EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration showcases the Rayon d sub-variety of Laelia grandis tenebrosa, a stunning orchid species native to tropical regions. The Rayon d, also known as Laelia grandis tenebrosa var. rayonii, is a sub-variety of the grand Laelia grandis orchid, which is known for its large, showy flowers. The illustration was drawn by the renowned Belgian botanical artist, C. de Bruyne, and chromolithographed by P. de Pannemaeker for Lucien Linden's "Lindenia, Iconography of Orchids," published in Brussels in 1902. The meticulous process of chromolithography involved using multiple plates, each coated with a different color, to create a vibrant and lifelike image. The Rayon d orchid is depicted here in all its exotic splendor, with its large, velvety petals unfurling from a central column. The petals are a rich, deep purple-black color, with intricate veining and a subtle sheen. The labellum, or lip, is a striking contrast, with its bright yellow color and intricate, wavy edges. This orchid was a popular subject for botanical illustrators of the time due to its rarity and beauty. The hothouse environment required to cultivate it made it a prized possession for collectors and botanical gardens around the world. Today, the Rayon d remains a beloved and intriguing orchid species, with its unique coloration and elegant form continuing to captivate plant enthusiasts and botanical artists alike.
