EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the early 1900s in Santa Barbara, California, USA, where the majestic Potter Hotel and Grounds once stood as a six-and-a-half story holiday resort. With 390 guest rooms, this immense structure was a true testament to the grandeur of the American hospitality industry. Nestled among the lush greenery, the hotel's lake became a popular attraction for visitors, offering a serene setting for leisurely sailing activities. The tranquil scene depicted in this circa 1907 photograph showcases the picturesque lake at the Potter Hotel and Grounds, dotted with sail boats gracefully cutting through the water. The Potter Hotel, with its impressive size and architectural grandeur, looms in the background, a symbol of luxury and elegance. Unfortunately, the Potter Hotel's story did not have a fairytale ending. On April 13, 1921, the hotel met a tragic end when it was consumed by flames in a devastating fire that spread rapidly, leaving only ruins behind in just three hours. The cause of the fire was later determined to be an electrical fault. Despite the hotel's demise, the memory of this once-great holiday destination lives on, leaving us with a glimpse into the rich history of Santa Barbara and the allure of a bygone era.
