EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Porbeagle Shark and Spiny Dogfish with a Spotted Spiny Lizard," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the early 19th century. The illustration, created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was published by F.G. Levrault and engraved by Massard, under the direction of Turpin. Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving features two species of fish: the Porbeagle Shark (Lamna nasus) and the Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias). The Porbeagle Shark, also known as the Maurus Shark, is a large, powerful predator found in cool temperate and subpolar waters. It is characterized by its distinctive dark coloration and long, curved pectoral fins. The Spiny Dogfish, on the other hand, is a small, spiky shark with a distinctive dorsal fin and sharp spines along its back. Intriguingly, the illustration also includes a Spotted Spiny Lizard (Scymnus spinosus), a reptile native to Europe and North Africa. It is unclear why this reptile was included in the illustration, but it may have been added for scale or to showcase the diversity of species that Pretre and his team were studying. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the time. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique allowed for a high level of detail and texture, making this an invaluable resource for scientists and naturalists of the past and present.
