EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic image from 1809, we witness a pivotal moment in the life of Pope Pius VII as he is arrested by French General Jean-Andoche Junot Radet. The Pope, whose given name was Barnaba Nicola Maria Luigi Chiaramonti, was taken from his papal residence in Rome and transported to the city of Florence, nominally for his own protection. The French army, led by Napolean Bonaparte, had invaded the Papal States in 1808, and the Pope was forced to sign the Concordat of Fontainebleau, which recognized French sovereignty over the Papal States. However, when the Pope attempted to revoke the agreement, he was arrested by General Radet on May 20, 1809. The image captures the moment of the Pope's arrest, with General Radet standing over him, dressed in his military uniform, while the Pope, wearing his papal robes, looks up at him with a somber expression. The scene is set against the backdrop of the papal palace, with soldiers and other officials present. This arrest marked a significant period in the history of the Catholic Church and the Papacy, as the Church was forced to navigate its relationship with the French government and the wider political landscape of Europe. The Pope was eventually released in 1814, following the fall of Napolean, and returned to Rome to resume his duties as the spiritual leader of the Catholic world. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in European history, and serves as a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous relationship between religion and politics.
