EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Royal Air Force (RAF) Westland Wessex HC.2 XR505 (msn WA130), during its first flight at RAF Odiham on the 1st of October, 1963. Delivered to the RAF on the 18th of October that same year, this particular Wessex helicopter was a significant addition to the British military's aviation fleet. The Westland Wessex HC.2 is a versatile, twin-engine, multi-role helicopter, which entered service with the RAF in 1963. Its advanced design and capabilities made it an invaluable asset for search and rescue, transport, and maritime operations. The helicopter's distinctive appearance, with its high-mounted wings and large fenestron tail, is a testament to the innovative engineering of its time. However, the story of XR505 does not end with its service in the RAF. In 1998, this helicopter was transferred to the Uruguay Navy, where it was given the registration A-081. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in its illustrious career, as it continued to serve its country in various roles. The photograph captures a moment in time, encapsulating the history and versatility of this remarkable helicopter.
